Fluted Cape Walk

PUFF-O-METRE

Level 3 out of 5 - Medium

OVERVIEW

This trail starts with a beach walk from the Bruny Island Cruises Restaurant that is located a few kms south of Adventure Bay. To get there, travel south from Hobart until you reach Kettering and then take the ferry across to Bruny Island. From there, you follow the main road along the island to the south and take the left at the main intersection after the Neck. The Bruny Island ferry runs 7 days a week and 365 days of the year. Note that the operating times vary depending on the time of the year and whether it's a busy period like long weekends.

The trail is a combination of easy and challenging terrain. We recommend that you take the loop in an anti clockwise direction. This means that you tackle the uphill sooner however its a more gradual incline over a long distance. In turn, it means that the downhill section is short and punchy. We highly recommend taking hiking poles for this trail if you own them, especially if you're doing it on a wet day.

Once at the top, you are greeted with some incredible views of the surrounding area. Due to the way the cliffs are, you don't get to truly appreciate what you're standing on until you start walking back down the hill and take in the cliffs while looking back. If you're all about the wow factor in a hike then maybe you're better off doing this clockwise but noting that it makes the hike far more challenging.

The trail is a combination of sand, gravel and dirt. There are a number of locations that groups of tree roots are exposed which may cause you to trip if you aren't paying attention. Keep to the trail at all times as there is sometimes less than a metre to the cliff edge from the main trail.

Grass Point has a wonderfully sheltered area that allows for a swim and a picnic. The trail from Grass Point back to the Bruny Island Cruises Restaurant is very easy going and makes for a pleasant way to finish up the hike.
