Cube Rock Trail

PUFF-O-METRE

Overview

There are a couple of ways to get to the start of this trail however knowing that it starts at the same location as Little Blue Lake, makes it easier to find. Its start is between Gladstone and Derby, roughly 7km south of Gladstone. Rather than parking just off the highway at Little Blue Lake, take the dirt road for another 100m and park in that carpark instead. This will give you a better view of the lake without too many people around and it has you parking at the start of the trail.

Follow the 4WD trail to the left of the lake and it will wind through the brush for about 1km. There are orange markers at regular intervals to help you find you way. This is the case for all the trail up to the top and then there are red markers all the way back down.

At the end of the 4WD trail, take a left, over the little creek and now the steep inclines occur. There is good solid ground under you all the way up however I'd reconsider doing this trail if it's raining as the rocks can get rather slippery especially at the top where you'll find yourself boulder-hopping. In the dry, this is a fairly easy trail other than the elevation gain over a short distance.

Once you reach Cube Rock, take in the views and have a picnic to make the hike worth your time as there are some stunning 360 degree views. If you walk past the cube, there is a natural lookout 40m further on that gives you a fantastic view of Little Blue Lake and a couple of other lakes in the area.
