Cape Queen Elizabeth

PUFF-O-METRE

Overview

This trail starts 22km along the Bruny Island Main Road from the Bruny Island ferry terminal. Access to the car park for the start of the trail is opposite the honey shop. The carpark isn't particularly big, therefore I wouldn't recommend bringing an oversized vehicle or a vehicle towing a trailer.

The trail starts off as a gravel road for the first kilometre or so, then it turns to sand and then turns back to dirt when you get to the open campsite area. After this, it's primarily a combination of sand, dirt and tree foliage until we get to the end of the trail.

There are a number of options on this trail as to where you'd like to walk and how far you'd like to walk. Most noteworthy is that if you'd like to access the archway the fastest way is via the beach (Blighs Rocks) and therefore you'll need a low tide. You can still access this archway on high tides however it means that you have to take the trail up over the cliff faces and back down along the other side to Miles Beach and backtrack to the archway. It's still easygoing, but requires a much longer hike. From the archway you can follow the beach to the end of the sand and then take the inland trail that takes you up onto the cliffs (Hounds Tooth) to overlook some spectacular scenery however if your preference is beach walking then maybe just stop before taking the inland track.

Miles Beach is a wonderful spot to stop and and have a picnic. This beach is the main attraction of the hike along with the archway. It is also accessible via 4WD track that will be covered in a later blog.

Note that when we hiked the trail, there had just been some vegetation back burning, as can be seen in some of the photos.
