Blue Tier to Bay of Fires via 4WD track
PUFF-O-METRE
Overview
Blue Tier Forest Reserve is the hub location to start off from when experiencing a whole range of hiking and mountain biking trails. This trail was meant to be a MTB trail only however due to recent storms prior, the first half of the track had been closed for maintenance. This trail closer meant that we took the 4WD track to Ansons Bay Road and from there, we took the intended MTB trail to Bay of Fires.
The 4WD track is challenging in some areas due to washouts and rocky outcrops however it also has some of the smoothest sections of the whole trail. If it's too much to ride in sections then it makes for a lovely walk with your bike hahaha. Jokes aside, it wasn't difficult going if you take it easy.
Once you reach the trail head of Ansons Bay, I recommend stopping to have lunch and clean your bike ready for the second part of the ride. This has you slowly climbing up the Doctors Peak Forest Reserve for about 13kms to admire Bay of Fires from a lookout. From there it's a fun 7km downhill run into the bay. This last section is well worth the rest of your day's riding. The trail is fast, smooth and incredibly well built. Being a Blue rated trail, there isn't much to worry about if you ride within your abilities. Where there are jumps, there is also a bypass track if you prefer a more relaxed ride.
The trail is a combination of sand, gravel, rock gardens and compact dirt. You can make the experience as hard or as easy as you like depending on what challenges you take on. The biggest obstacle of note is simply the distance as it's 42kms with plenty of elevation climbing over a long distance and a couple of fun/fast downhill sections. I'd recommend a dual suspension bike as the preferred option however a hardtail would be more than capable of taking this adventure on.
Location From Major City: 135km North-East of Launceston or 29km West of St Helens
