Commercial Hotel Cygnet
The Commercial Hotel is located in Cygnet, approximately 54km south of Hobart.
This cosy country pub is known to locals as "the bottom pub" to geographically distinguish it from "the top pub" at the other end of Cygnet.
The Commercial has two eateries - a bistro/restaurant to the rear of the hotel and a café at the front of the hotel which is a more casual environment and offers takeaway and ready made meals.
The focus of this review is on the bistro/restaurant.
The food at The Commercial is really delicious and excellent value for money. The meals are hearty and generous.
We started off with the cheese and garlic bread which had plenty of cheese and garlic and was a great dish to share.
The seafood chowder with sourdough was a huge size for an entrée - it would certainly do as a main for most people. The chowder itself was creamy and packed full of diced white fish and diced prawns. The sourdough cob served as the bowl and was the perfect vessel to mop up the creamy chowder which not only filled up the sourdough cob but also overflowed into the ceramic bowl. We love that they don't skimp on the food.
The lemon pepper squid with garden salad comes as either an entrée or main size and again, the entrée size was rather large. The squid was tender and tasty and the salad provided some freshness.
The Commercial offers a number of daily specials including a roast of the day. We had the pork with steamed vegetables and crackling. This comforting dish was tasty and the fresh vegetables were outstanding.
The fish of the day was fresh barramundi with chips and salad. The portion was huge and the barramundi was beautifully cooked.
The chicken schnitzel with creamy seafood sauce and chips was delightful. The chicken was succulent on the inside and crispy on the outside.
The crumbed Tasmanian scallops with chips and salad (we passed on the salad) were crispy and fresh and the scallops were plump.
Whatever you choose to eat, make sure you get some chips as part of your meal or as a side. They are amazing!
The Commercial also offers a handful of traditional homemade desserts. We had the golden syrup dumplings with ice cream and cream. Just like grandma used to make, the dumplings were light and the sauce was rich and sweet. Such a fantastic way to finish a meal on a cold night.
