Billy Brown Falls

Overview

The track to Billy Brown Falls is a bit like a "choose your own adventure". We started from Huonville, headed along to Judbury, across the bridge and up Judds Creek Road. From there you follow a dirt road for approximately 8 km until you enter the Conservation Park. It's at this point you've got a couple of options depending on what vehicle you have. If you have a regular car I suggest parking at the lower carpark near the big pipes and either hiking or mountain biking up to the track entrance. If you own a four-wheel drive or a vehicle that has high clearance you could drive up to the track entrance or the top carpark however just because you have the vehicle to do it doesn't mean you can't hike that distance or mountain bike it too. It's 3.5 km from the lower carpark to the upper carpark or trail entrance.

Now onto the track. If you own hiking poles, I suggest you take them with you. This track is up and down and there are no flat sections. There is a resting seat at the top of the climb before you head down into the Falls and while you may laugh at it on the way there, I can assure you on the way back you'll have a rest after climbing out from the Falls!

The climb from the carpark to the top is a mainly dirt and foliage track. This section is fairly easy going considering it's uphill all the way. The downhill into the Falls is predominantly rock and rock step so this is where you will need to take it nice and easy and where your hiking poles come into their own. Climbing back out from the falls is a far more challenging task due to the rock steps and steep incline.

The Falls themselves are quite spectacular. We happened to go on a day when there wasn't a huge amount of water flow, but it certainly gave us options of where we could have a nice picnic break before heading back. Even without much flowing water, it was very evident that in high water periods most of the rock surfaces get covered by some sort of water due to the amount of algae / moss buildup on them.
