Donaghys Hill

PUFF-O-METRE

OVERVIEW

Donaghys Hill is located along the Lyell Highway 51km South-East of Queenstown. At the start of the track, there is a large gravel carpark that has enough space to turn motorhomes or even caravans depending on your driving ability. Our setup measures in at 13m, trailer and vehicle combined, and it had plenty of room to turn around without needing to back up or do a three point turn.

The track is lovely and wide for the most part. It starts off as a vehicle width gravel road that then turns into a wide track at the 400m mark. At points along the track, you'll find yourself on boardwalks and stairs to help you navigate the challenging terrain. This assistance makes the track rather easy going. 100m from the end, the track narrows up but doesn't become any harder to walk. The bush opens up at this point, giving you a wonderful view of the surrounding countryside. I'd say this is impressive however once you reach the landing on the lookout, it dwarfs this view completely.

The lookout gives you a genuine 360 degree view of all the surrounding landscape, with Frenchmans Cap being the highlight of what can be seen. On each of the four sides, there are maps of what you can see on each side therefore removing any of the guess work of what's on display. For such a short walk, it's well worth the stop as only a snippet of this view can be enjoyed as you drive by.
