Saltshaker Restaurant

 Saltshaker Restaurant

Saltshaker Restaurant is located in the beachside town of Swansea, approximately 135km north-east of Hobart and approximately 154km south-east of Launceston.

Saltshaker serves breakfast, lunch and dinner and has gorgeous water views overlooking Great Oyster Bay.

The restaurant caters for indoor and outdoor dining, and although most of the tables have views, we suggest you sit on the deck if the weather is nice.

The lunch and dinner menu primarily focuses on fresh Tasmanian seafood (probably no surprise given the restaurant's coastal location!) with other lunch favourites of a more casual nature including burgers, steak sandwich and bbq pork ribs and dinner favourites including Tasmanian grass-fed eye fillet beef, herb crusted lamb rack and chicken breast pockets filled with crispy bacon, mushroom and garlic butter for dinner. Pizzas are also available for lunch and dinner.

We commenced our dinner feast with homemade beer loaf with garlic butter, hummus dip and caramelised balsamic oil. The loaf had a texture similar to that of scones and served as the perfect vessel to soak up the trio of dips.

The seafood chowder was creamy and tasty and contained plump prawns and scallops, calamari, white fish and salmon.

The half shell mornay scallops were baked in a creamy, tasty sauce with a hint of spice. The scallops were accompanied by the most amazing raw broccoli salad, dressed in a creamy, light dressing with dried cranberries, crisp apple and red onion. It's great to see restaurants putting so much effort into their side salads.

Next was the seafood tasting plate and it was a joy to eat.

The natural oysters were so delicious and fresh (probably farmed in the water we were overlooking), the cooked king prawns were juicy and fresh, there was lovely salty smoked salmon, more half shell mornay scallops and tangy pickled octopus.

We finished our meal with hearty homemade apple crumble with ice cream and cream and a rich, molten chocolate fondant with ice cream and cream. These desserts were decadent, but not too heavy, and cooked to perfection.

There is also a pizza café next door which caters for dine-in and takeaway meals and is the perfect place to grab a pizza from if you're looking for a relaxed meal in the comfort of your own accommodation.

Saltshaker is a great place to enjoy a hearty breakfast while sitting in the sun on the alfresco deck.

The pancakes were light and fluffy and the poached and fried eggs were cooked perfectly with just the right amount of yolky ooziness.

The most interesting dish was baked avocado, egg and smoked salmon accompanied with smashed potato and sour cream. Served in a cast iron dish with crispy golden smashed potatoes on the side, all of the ingredients worked really well together in this dish.

The next time you're staying at or passing through Swansea, stop in and enjoy a meal at Saltshaker.
