North West Bay River Pool
North West Bay River Pool

OVERVIEW
Tasmania is full of hidden gems and over time we'll let you see them as we explore this beautiful state. Today's hike will take you to one of my favourites that doesn't require a lifted four wheel drive or hours of hiking. This one can be accessed with an easy hour hike and a little rock hopping.
It's located in Longley along the banks of the North West Bay River. Drive to Longley and follow Betts Road (it's a dirt road) to the end. There you'll find yourself with plenty of parking options and your first view of the river.
Follow the Cathedral Rock hiking trail for 1.5km. This trail follows the river for all of that distance and is fairly easy going. You'll then find yourself at a fork, if you take the left then you'll rapidly head uphill to continue up to Cathedral Rock. Instead of doing that, keep going straight until you find yourself on the river bed. It's at this point that you have about 300m of rock hopping to get to the pool.
Now this beautiful pool has all the makings of the perfect day trip location. It has multiple deep sections to swim in, it has a couple of shallow locations for those that just want to dip their feet in. It has a natural rock slide that has you entering to water by the waterfall that fills the pool. Overlooking this oasis is a small semi-flat area that's perfect for enjoying a picnic on or blowing up an air mattress to relax on for an afternoon nap. It really does have all options covered for whatever your tastes might be.
The river is easy to negotiate however there are two important safety features to remember. Don't go on this hike in the wet period as the river will be fast flowing and make it too dangerous to hike. Also, Parks and Wildlife close this track down on high or extreme fire danger days.
Breathtakingly beautiful.
