Don Mario's

 Don Mario's

Don Mario's is a homely Italian restaurant located in George Town, approximately 50km north of Launceston.

Run by a lovely husband and wife team, it's easy to see why this restaurant is popular among locals and tourists. The food is wholesome and comforting and the staff are warm, friendly and accommodating. Walking into this restaurant is like stepping into nonna's house.

Don Mario's serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as takeaway meals, pizzas and coffees.

There are a wide variety of dishes on the breakfast menu. We dined on scrambled eggs with bacon and toasted pana de casa, fritelle al burro (fluffy buttermilk pancakes with caramelised banana and marscapone) and 'Mario's Pan', a delicious pan filled with the most amazing diced Italian sausage, poached egg, mushroom, roasted tomato, avocado, grilled haloumi, feta cheese, lemon wedges and toasted pana de casa. Each meal was perfectly cooked and the flavours were amazing.

The dinner menu offers traditional Italian meals such as pasta and risotto, light salads, seafood dishes and a selection of carne dishes "from the grill". Pizzas are not available on the dine-in menu - they are limited to takeaway orders.

We started with the tasty mixed platter, which consisted of garlic bread, herb bread, an arancini ball, grilled haloumi and aioli. The haloumi was salty and plump, but not "squeaky" and the crisp outer coating of the arancini was a lovely textural contrast to the creamy inner filling.

Salt and pepper misto (lightly battered and deep fried salt and pepper calamari and prawns) and spaghetti gamberi (sauteed tiger prawns) took our fancy for mains. The seafood was perfectly cooked and the spaghetti gamberi was full of flavour without being too heavy.

Desserts were outstanding - creamy crème brûlée garnished with mixed berries (the toffee cracked with a spectacular "snap" when tapped with the back of the spoon) and the caramelised banana crepes drizzled with butterscotch sauce and adorned with fresh berries were one of the tastiest crepe dishes we have ever tasted.
