OVERVIEW
**NOTE** At the time of writing this, 22/12/21, the dam wall was closed for repairs therefore the loop was unavailable. Instead, you are required to hike up and back around the dam.
Risdon Brook Dam is located just outside of Hobart and is one of the main water sources for Southern Tasmania. It has plenty of infrastructure added around the dam to make it useful for all sorts of activities. The main carpark can hold a comfortable 30+ vehicles and has all types of toilet facilities available. There is a sealed road down to the dam and an unloading area to allow wheelchair access onto the disabled fishing pontoons. There is a kids playground and multiple picnic areas that allow for BBQs.
The common walk is the track around the dam. This is a comfortable 4.3km loop with a couple of hills to deal with on one side of the dam while the other side is all flat. The track is wide and well maintained therefore making it perfect for all types of walkers. There are multiple park bench locations that offer a place to rest or escape the heat while enjoying a lovely view of the dam.
For those that want a bit more of a challenge, there is the Mt Direction hike. This also starts at the carpark and follows the clockwise side of the dam for about a KM. It then diverts off, becomes a narrow goat track, that winds up the hill to the top of Mt Direction. This then gives you a fantastic view of the dam and the surrounding suburbs.
