Fortescue Bay to Bivouac Heights return

Fortescue Bay to Bivouac Heights return

PUFF-O-METRE

OVERVIEW

  • To get to Fortescue Bay from Hobart, take the Tasman Highway out to Sorell, and then the Arthur Highway all the way to Taranna. Keep driving through Taranna along the highway for another 5km and you will see Fortescue Road on the left hand side. Take this road all the way to the end where there is a carpark and camping locations.

This walk isn't what you'd consider a tough walk in terms of elevation but when you add the elevation changes along with the medium distance, it takes it to a medium level hike. With this in mind, there is the option to break up the hike into an overnight trip by staying at Bivouac Bay. This also opens up the options of some spectacular sunrise/sunset photos to be captured at Bivouac Heights which is only a 15-20min hike from the campsite.

About half way along the hike to Bivouac Bay is Canoe Bay. This makes for a great lunch break location with open ground to relax on as well as an interesting view of the ship wreck "The William Pitt'' in the centre of the bay.

The track is easy going and well worn in due to all the traffic it receives. It's a combination of rock steps, dirt trails and beach runs. It makes for a challenging day hike therefore I'd recommend it as a relaxed overnight hike instead.

There is also camping, cooking and toilet facilities at Fortescue Bay which are worth enjoying therefore maybe opening this hike up to a full weekend trip away.
