Don Camillo

 Don Camillo

Don Camillo is a traditional Italian restaurant located in the Hobart suburb of Sandy Bay.

From the moment you spot the red Vespa parked out the front of the restaurant, you know you're about to experience something special. As you walk through the cleverly placed heavy, black drapes that separate the front of house area from the dining room, you are transported to an old school Italian eatery. Each table is dressed with an iconic red and white checkered tablecloth and a small twinkling lamp. The atmosphere is intimate and cosy while the staff members are welcoming and always happy to have a chat.

The menu offers traditional Italian cuisine - simple and fresh ingredients, cooked to perfection to produce amazingly complex flavours. Think: housemade breads adorned with garlic, mushrooms or tomato; a dozen different pasta and risotto dishes and mains (secondi) such as free range chicken breast wrapped in prosciutto, pan fried veal with marsala wine, and herb crumbed veal cotoletta.

The portions are generous in size and they don't skimp on the good stuff - the spaghetti marinara is packed full of fresh, plump seafood. Pizza lovers beware: there is not a pizza in sight at this eatery.

For dessert (dolci), indulge in the creamiest cassata we've ever tasted, or try other house favourites such as tiramisu (the flavours are so well-balanced), affogato or a wobbly panna cotta.

This restaurant has been keeping tummies full and satisfied since 1965 and as a result has gained quite a following. It's amazing to hear just how many locals have a memorable connection with this restaurant spanning the decades.

If you haven't yet experienced an evening at Don Camillo, put it on your list of places to try.
