The Cascade Hotel

The Cascade Hotel, located in South Hobart, is an historic hotel, bistro and bar.

It's easy to see why this spot is a regular haunt for many Hobartians - the bistro provides a relaxing atmosphere, friendly and accommodating hospitality along with great value for money. Even on a cold Sunday night in the middle of a school term, you'll find the pub and bistro packed with diners.

You can order traditional pub grub such as steaks, fish 'n' chips, schnitzels and roast of the day or you can try something a little more adventurous like braised venison casserole and wallaby burger.

The portion sizes are humungous and it's clear they only use quality ingredients - the seafood topping on "The Northumberland" (The Cascade's take on surf 'n' turf) consists of plump Tassie scallops, decent-sized tiger prawns (not those tiny little ones you too often get at pubs!) and squid.

The marinated wallaby fillet with oven roasted vegetables was probably the dish of the night - the wallaby was tender and had the most amazing smoky flavour.

The brandy sautéed lambs fry with bacon with creamy mash and toasted sourdough was also another standout dish. Lambs fry can be hard to come by these days, so if this dish tickles your fancy, The Cascade Hotel is certainly worth a visit.

The desserts are simple and hearty. The ice cream sundae was whimsical and fun and the apple and blackberry crumble with vanilla ice cream (on the specials board) was warming and flavoursome. The oat, nut and coconut crumble topping had a lovely texture.

Do yourself a favour and try the outstanding meals at The Cascade Hotel.

Tip - don't forget to check the specials board!
