Mayfield Bay
Mayfield Bay
Three of the sites have vehicle access, though preferably 4WD access due to the steep nature on grass and mud in the wet periods, that you can set up a tent with ease on. There is also a fourth site (that I'm reluctant to tell you about because I want it to always be available for me!!) which is close to the beach and separated from the rest of the campsites. This campsite gives you the best views, the most privacy and has parking for a vehicle, but is not suitable if you are using your vehicle as part of your camping setup.
Mayfield Bay has three toilets that are regularly cleaned and well maintained. The toilets don't have hand washing facilities. These are centrally located between the main campsites and the beach. Fires are permitted at these campsites and most of them have fire pits or rock pits already located in each site. Note that fires will not be permitted on total fire ban days. Wood isn't supplied, therefore you'll need to bring your own.
The beach is a beautiful long beach and it allows for a very pleasant walk. Each end has rocky outcrops that allow great fishing, while the main section of the beach allows for surfing and swimming in relatively sheltered conditions due to the crescent nature of the beach.
About 100m south of the camping location is a set of ruins that are stone archways. These archways can be accessed from the road down a path or they're better observed from the beach giving you a long distance view as well as allowing you access to closely examine them.
Mayfield Bay is a very popular campsite location especially during the summer periods and during cray season. If you wish to avoid the crowds or guarantee a site, I recommend a mid-week visit. Pets are allowed at these campsites however they are required to be on a lead. At the northern end of the bay there is a large parking area for visitors and also a day picnic area that is set up with picnic tables. Although Mayfield Bay is seen as a weekend camping location, it also makes a good day location to break up the trip when driving from Hobart up to some of the northern coastal towns.
