Huon River - Huonville to Franklin
The Huon River is not only an icon of Tasmanian water systems but it also extends for several hundreds of kilometres. With this in mind, this post will focus on the section from Huonville to Franklin. Once you travel further up the river from Huonville, it is affected by rainfall and snow melts. However from Huonville down to Franklin, this stretch of water is affected by tidal currents. The two bodies of water meet at Huonville and this is why the town is seasonally affected by flooding under the right conditions.
It stands to reason that kayaking up the Huon River after Huonville is quite a challenge. Our focus is on the more southerly section of the river which has less of an opposing current issue. I still recommend that if you plan to kayak up and back, that you review the tidal charts so that you can use the tide to help you rather than it fight your progress.
There are multiple entry and exit points into the river at Huonville however the boat ramp (at Huonville Foreshore) and the jetty opposite the boat ramp are the two easiest access locations. Both of these locations also have plenty of parking available. At Franklin, the easiest point of entry is at the rowing club and this area also has plenty of parking available.
This stretch of the river makes for a lovely day out while allowing you to pack light with the ability to grab food at the half way point whether you make that Huonville or Franklin. Both locations have plenty of food options available and well within walking distance of where you'd come ashore.
